Published on 2013-07-18 by Addison-Wesley

This is the digital version of the printed book (Copyright © 1996). Learning the basics of a modeling technique is not the same as learning how to use and apply it. To develop a data model of an organization is to gain insights into its nature that do not come easily. Indeed, analysts are often expected to understand subtleties of an organization's structure that may have evaded people who have worked there for years. Here's help for those analysts who have learned the basics of data modeling (or |entity/relationship modeling|) but who need to obtain the insights required to prepare a good model of a real business. Structures common to many types of business are analyzed in areas such as accounting, material requirements planning, process manufacturing, contracts, laboratories, and documents. In each chapter, high-level data models are drawn from the following business areas: The Enterprise and Its World The Things of the Enterprise Procedures and Activities Contracts Accounting The Laboratory Material Requirements Planning Process Manufacturing Documents Lower-Level Conventions

Talking with the President PDF Free

Talking with the President PDF
By:John Wilson
Published on 2015-03-04 by Oxford University Press

This book provides a pragmatic analysis of presidential language. Pragmatics is concerned with |meaning in context,| or the relationship between what we say and what we mean. John Wilson explores the various ways in which U.S. Presidents have used language within specific social contexts to achieve specific objectives. This includes obfuscation, misdirection, the use of metaphor or ambiguity, or in some cases simply lying. He focuses on six presidents: John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Ronald W. Reagan, William F. Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack H. Obama. These presidents cover most of the last half of the twentieth century, and the first decade of the twenty first century, and each has been associated with a specific linguistic quality. John F. Kennedy was famed for his quality of oratory, Nixon for his manipulative use of language, Reagan for his gift of telling stories, Clinton for his ability to engage the public and to linguistically turn arguments and descriptions in particular directions. Bush, on the other hand, was famed for his inability to use language appropriately, and Obama returns us to the rhetorical flourishes of early Kennedy. In the case of each president, a range of specific examples are explored in order to highlight the ways in which a pragmatic analysis may provide an insight into presidential language. In many cases, what the president says is not necessarily what the president means.

Understanding Modernity PDF
By:Richard Munch
Published on 2010-11-01 by Taylor & Francis

First Published in 1988, this volume works towards a new understanding and exploration of the rise and development of modern society, taking its lead from two classical theorists, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber. The key concept of this approach is the 'interpenetration' of different spheres of action. Richard Münch begins with an exploration of the points of convergence and divergence in the works of Durkheim and Weber. He then builds, from Durkheim, a new theory of social order as a complex set of ordering, dynamizing, identity-producing and goal-setting factors. Münch also constructs a new theory of personality development, based on Durkheim's view of the duality of human nature. He concludes by assessing weber's contribution to our understanding of how modern social order emerged, showing that the unique features of modern society emerged from the 'interpenetration' of cultural, political, communal and economic spheres in action.

Relationship Between Service‐Related Activities, Service Capability and Market Diffusion: Case of WiBro PDF
By:
Published on 2014 by

Abstract : The market performance of WiBro in Korea has not been as expected, and its rapid diffusion in the near future is unlikely owing to the existence of competing services. There has been little research on the factors affecting this low market diffusion. This study is based on an analytical framework in which a lack of service capability and the insufficiency of service‐related activities have resulted in the current poor market performance. An expert survey was conducted on WiBro specialists and verified using the analytical hierarchy process method. The result of this analysis is as follows: underinvestment in network deployment and marketing, insufficient promotional policies, and a shortage of service capabilities are to be analyzed as the main causes of WiBro's low market diffusion.

Today's college students have never known a time when personal computers did not exist. They attended K-12 schools where most of their classrooms were equipped with computers. Information technology has always been part of their learning process, not to mention the impact it has had on the development of their friendships, research and writing skills, shopping, and choice of college or university to attend. They expect that institutions of higher education will respond to their inquiries without delay, much in the same way that customer service is handled on the Web. Student expectations are driving the creation of live Web chats, in-house social networking sites, university wiki, and shared virtual spaces. Unfortunately, higher education faculty and staff in general, and student affairs professionals in particular, are behind the curve in their use of information technology. Student affairs professionals are only starting to become aware that they should learn about the technologies that students have already integrated into their lives. It is imperative that student affairs professions understand these technologies and learn how to implement them to enhance student learning build a sense of community increase student engagement facilitate communication This volume examines recent research on how information technology is affecting college student development and explores ways in which institutions are responding to increased demands for using emerging technology in supporting students. Behavioral Approaches to Crime and Delinquency PDF
By:Edward K. Morris,Curtis J. Braukmann
Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

The systematic application of behavioral psychology to crime and delinquency was begun only 20 years ago, yet it has already contributed significantly to our practical knowledge about prevention and correction and to our general under standing of a pressing social problem. In this handbook, we review and evalu ate what has been accomplished to date, as well as what is currently at the leading edge of the field. We do so in order to present a clear, comprehensive, and systematic view of the field and to promote and encourage still more effective action and social policy reform in the future. The chapters in this text have been written by professionals who were among the original innovators in applying behavioral psychology to crime and delinquency and who continue to make critical contributions to the field's progress, and by a new generation of energetic, young professionals who are taking the field in important and innovative directions. The contributors have attempted to review and evaluate their areas with critical dispassion, to pro vide thorough but not overly specialized discussion of their material, and to draw implications for how research, application, and social policy might be improved in the future. For our part as editors, we have tried to foster integra tion across the chapters and to provide background and conceptual material of our own.

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Value Chain Activities and Generic Strategies in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in UK Manufacturing PDF Free

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Value Chain Activities and Generic Strategies in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in UK Manufacturing PDF
By:Antonios Michail
Published on 2013-09 by GRIN Verlag

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: -, University of Central Lancashire, language: English, abstract: In this study an in depth investigation of successful competitive strategies for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is undertaken. The overall aim of this study is to analyse the strategic orientation of UK Manufacturing SMEs. In the process, it will test Porter's (1980, 1985) theoretical framework of generic strategies and thus evaluate firms' preferred strategic synthesis. It will, therefore, test the efficacy of the value chain and develop any specific pattern that relates to a combination strategy. The investigation of the above objectives is undertaken utilising a mixed research methodology with the purpose of examining the applicability of existing competitive strategy frameworks (phase 1) and testing a new theoretical framework that incorporates additional dimensions of strategy (phase 2). During phase 1, Porter's framework is employed to investigate SMEs' strategic orientation as a means to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. A semi-structured questionnaire is employed and the analysis is carried out by means of factor and cluster analysis to identify strategic variables currently employed by SMEs. During phase 2, the theoretical framework is operationalised to bridge the gap within the literature and existing empirical research. Its purpose is to identify forms of successful competitive strategies of UK MSMEs as they are formulated and implemented in firms' value chain activities. The data was collected through a number of semi-structured interviews and the analysis was based on data categorisation.
